CELSO LUFT


Celso Luft was born in a city inhabited by German descendants, immigrants. He was a teacher's son. His father taught him music and languages. When he became a teenager, he went to the seminar of Irmãos Maristas, at Instituto Champagnat, in Porto Alegre. He graduated in Classical Languages at PUC-RS and he did a course of specialization in Portugal. He was a professor at UFRGS and at Faculdade Porto- Alegrense in Sciency and Language.In 1954, Celso went to France to study. From 1955 to 1956, he studied with Lindley Cintra, in Lisboa and did a specialization course of Portuguese and Linguistics at Coimbra University.In1963, when he was forty years old, Celso married to Lya Fett, when she was twenty-one years old, and she became a writer, Lya Luft. They met during a university entrance examination, and later, she was his student. Then, Celso known as Irmão Arnulfo, abandoned celibacy to marry. They had three childern: Suzana (1965), André (1966) and Eduardo (1969).Form 1970 to 1984, he keept a daily column in the Correio do Povo News, called Mundo das Palavras, about language issues. Next year he published Língua e Liberdade.In 1985, Celso and Lya divorced, and she decided to dedicate herself to psichology and also to the writer Hélio Pellegrino, who died in 1988. In 1992, Celso and Lya married again. He died in December in 1995, after two years of sickmess.He is author of many books used in school nowadays.
